If you or a loved one has been involved in a car accident, you know how devastating the recovery process can be. You may suffer catastrophic injuries. And even have serious damage to your car. Even a wreck as minor as a fender bender can cause serious injuries, such as broken bones, spinal injuries, and whiplash. After the collision, you may feel like you have no one to turn to and very few options to recover the money you have lost. The insurance company may send you a settlement offer, but chances are it will be a lot less money than you deserve - in fact, it may not even cover all of your bills. Don’t let that be you. Protect yourself and your chances of fair compensation with the help of an attorney at the Levine Law Group.
Types of injuries that can result from car accidents:
- Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) which are caused by strong jolts or blows to the head or by objects piercing the skull and brain. The most severe can cause incapacitation, coma or even death.
- Spinal cord injuries may leave a person paralyzed from the below the shoulders or waist. Car crashes, motorcycle wrecks and falls are some of the most common ways these injuries happen.
- Broken bones, dislocations and sometimes even amputations can be the results of accidents that sever or partially sever limbs. Extensive rehabilitation and/or expensive prosthetic equipment may be necessary to help victims regain some normalcy.
- Organ damage and other internal injuries are not uncommon in accidents involving blunt force trauma. These injuries are not always immediately apparent so you should always get medical attention after a serious accident even if you don’t think you were hurt.
- Severe soft tissue injuries are highly painful and leave joints and muscles unstable at the injury area. Recuperation can involve extensive rehabilitative therapy.
What you should do in the event you are involved in an accident:
If you have been involved in a car accident, check on everyone in the vehicle to determine if anyone is injured. If you or your passengers are seriously injured, do not move them unless their life is in immediate danger, such as if the car is on fire. Call 911, request an ambulance and wait for help to arrive. However, if you are not seriously injured, move to a safe location, such as the side of the road. While you're waiting for 911 to arrive, check on the passengers in the other vehicle(s) as well, following the same procedure as above. Be sure to also take as many photos as you can of the damage to the cars, your injuries, road and weather conditions, insurance cards, license plates and anything else you may think is important. Be sure to never admit fault to the other involved parties either. When the police arrive, provide a statement that details exactly what happened, but avoid adding in your opinion about who was at fault. Be sure to get evaluated by the EMTs and follow their treatment instructions - including going to the hospital if they say so. You should also follow up with your regular doctor in the following days to make sure you are on the right road to recovery.
